Lovely performances today!

Dear parents,

The children sang "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" beautifully during our matinee and evening performance. I did have to speak harshly to our class after the matinee, as I wasn't pleased with their audience/listening skills. They were angels during the evening performance! Guess they just needed to hear grumpy Mrs. Karr rant for a few minutes!!

Please remember to sign up for a treat for our Friday afternoon party, if you are able.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Skyscraper projects done!

Dear parents,

Miss Gardiner came in to finish up the skyscraper projects with the children today. They look great! Please come in and see our hallway display.

We created a class Christmas tree out of text books and lights.

Some children in the class created a sign up sheet for treats for our class party on Friday afternoon. If you are able, please sign up for a treat or two.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Christmas concert rehearsals

Dear parents,

We had a great afternoon making our Christmas centerpieces! Thanks to our Grade 7's, who used to be my Grade 3's, for mentoring and being good role models for our Grade 3's!

We will be rehearsing for our Christmas concert for most of tomorrow.

Please remember to have your child dressed in their holiday best for Wednesday. We have a matinee performance and an evening performance on Wednesday. The children are expected back to our classroom by 6:30 PM on Wednesday. The concert begins at 6:45 PM! It won't be more than an hour. Please pick up your child back at our room. If you plan to have another parent pick up your child from the evening performance, please let me know.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!! We'll all make it to the holidays in one piece I'm sure!!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Centerpiece making next Monday!

Dear parents,

Next Monday afternoon, December 16th, from 1:30 until 2:30, we will be buddying up with our Grade 7's to make evergreen centerpieces. Please have your child bring a clean margarine or yogurt container (500 ml size), some greenery cut from cedar, fir, and holly trees, and some small ornaments to make their centerpieces. Greenery should be brought in plastic bags (white kitchen catcher size is fine).

I will buy the wet oasis sponge to stick the greenery in. There may even be goodies, you just never know!! :)

If you can provide more than one container and/or greenery, that would be super. It's always good to have extras in case some children don't bring their supplies in.

Thanks for your help with this!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Hyper today?

Dear parents,

Sorry if your child came home rather hyper today. We were constructing 3-D figures with marshmallows and toothpicks. I suggested eating around 4! Well, you know the rest of this story!! He he At any rate, they had fun, and hopefully learned a lot about corners, edges and faces.

The children will be singing "Jolly Old St. Nicholaus" for the Christmas concert sing-a-long next Wednesday, December 18th. The children will be performing for a matinee during class time on Wednesday, but they will also be required to return for the evening concert. We are asking that they wear their holiday best for both these concerts. No special colours are needed, but just wear dressier clothes and shoes. Our music teacher rehearsed the song today. They will have one more rehearsal prior to their concert, so please stress quiet responsible manners when going to music.

We had a good games day today. I bought a bracelet making "thing" for the class and it seemed to be a big hit.

Thanks to Toma for an enjoyable guitar performance last Sunday down at Capilano Mall!

Thanks also to Maya and Linnea, who sharpened a multitude of pencils today! Yes, they also did their regular work!!

Reminder that we have Library tomorrow. Mrs. Evans would appreciate getting all overdue books in prior to the Christmas holidays.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Nutcracker Ballet

Dear parents,

We sure had the right backdrop for the performance today. It was magical with the snow falling down. A few if us, including me, went slip sliding away on our walk to and from the theatre.

I had many former students performing today, so that's always enjoyable to see them grow up and take on more challenging lead roles in the production.

Our students were moderately well behaved. I would have preferred less wiggling around and less chatting during the show, but considering this was a first live performance for many students, I don't think we fared too badly.

Mr. Chan will be teaching the class until recess tomorrow while I attend a meeting.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Spelling words for Dec. 9-13

Dear parents,

Our spelling words are the past tense of irregular verbs. They are: laid, said, saw, flew, took, wrote, woke, won, rode, fell, held, swam, sent, built, and went. The bonus words are sarcophagus and lustrous.

I won't be doing a theme for next week, as we will be doing Christmas activities.

We are going to The Nutcracker Ballet performance next Monday, December 9th. We will walk to and from the theatre so make sure your children are dressed for the weather. Boots may be needed, as snow is forecasted. I have gone over my behaviour expectations for this field trip with the students, but I'd appreciate it if you emphasize quiet and appreciative audience manners with your child.

We have a Christmas band performance at 2:15 on Wednesday, and we have a Christmas craft making morning on Thursday. Sounds like Christmas is on it's way!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Spelling words Dec. 2-6

Dear parents,

Our Spelling words for next week are past tense of final y words. They are: played, stayed, sprayed, swayed, obeyed, enjoyed, cried, fried, dried, tried, pried, carried, hurried, studied, and worried. The bonus words are mezzanine and observation.

Our Theme Reading for next week is about sunken treasure ships. Our words are: pirate, treasure, trade, divers, wreck, crew, sailboats, masts, sailors, and cargo. Please go over the meaning of these words with your child.

I took a photo of our assembled skyscraper. It did remain standing for about 30 seconds before it caved in! Needless to say, it ended up in recycling this weekend! The students learned a lot about I-beam construction while doing this building project.

We have early dismissal for parent teacher conferences this week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 2:00 PM.  Please make alternate arrangements to pick up your child at this earlier time.

We have Pizza Day for hot lunch on Friday!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

Fun friendships and fitness

Dear parents,

The children continued their research on skyscrapers. They are really getting the idea about working together cooperatively and not being controlling and/or bossy. This isn't easy!! I tell the children that adults often find this hard to do.

We had another great fitness class!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Gerri Karr

PS:  We have our spelling test tomorrow as Friday is a Professional Day.
